Leon Weliczker Wells was born in Lvov, Poland, on March 10, 1925. He was a prisoner in the Janowska concentration camp during World War II. He published his memoir of this period entitled The Janowska Road. In 1987 Wells published Who Speaks for the Vanquished?, a study of the response of American Jews to the Holocaust.
